The audience would have been much more familiar with the story, yes, and history was a popular subject of stage plays. Our first read last year was Romeo and Juliet!
That was my first Shakespeare in high school, too, along with Julius Caesar. I probably could not follow the plot of either one. I hope to gain momentum, once your class gets going or afterward, to reread those and the nine I read in college that I probably also didn't follow. Re: people in the 1600s -- would most people who saw plays have been able to read?
